FOLK AND FAIRY TALE VARIATIONS
Folk and fairy tales exist in a variety of retellings, illustrated by many different illustrators. Because of the abundance of these books, comparing and contrasting the stories is an excellent reading comprehension activity. After reading three or four versions of the same story, create a chart that compares culture (if appropriate) or setting, main characters, elements of the plot, special (or magical) objects, repeated refrains, or other aspects unique to the particular story.

Another possible comparison across versions is the interpretation of the tale by various illustrators. Discuss the depiction of the characters and the setting by different artists, or locate one scene in multiple versions and compare how the illustrators portray that scene. For example, the illustrations of the gingerbread house in “Hansel and Gretel,” as drawn by Susan Jeffers, Paul O. Zelinsky, and James Marshall, look very different from each other.

The titles below are listed in order of the original copyright dates. Check school and public library shelves for some of the older versions. Compare the styles of art in the earlier titles with those of more recently published books.
