I started my career as an elementary school teacher in Indiana. After earning a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, I spent 20 years as a university professor at the University of Texas-San Antonio and at the University of Nebraska teaching courses in reading, language arts, children’s literature, and adolescent literature. I left the university to become an elementary school library media specialist and recently retired from that position after 12 years. I have served as a consultant for the PBS program “Reading Rainbow” and author of the Teacher’s Guide and Math Guide for the series. I currently write the “Wild About Books” column for School Library Monthly. I live, surrounded by books, in a log house in Nebraska with my husband and our two dogs. |
